Master Mazu (709-788)

Master Mazu was student of Master Huairang (677-744), a senior disciple of the Sixth Patriarch Huineng. Two of the five houses of Chinese Zen trace their origin to the Sixth Patriarch through him.

Magistrate Lian of Hongzhou province asked Master Mazu,

“Should I drink wine and eat meat, or not?”

Master Mazu said,

“To consume wine and meat is your privilege. To not consume them is your merit.”
